Every Pompy Virtual Design Consultation begins with learning what the client is looking for in their space. Whether a single room (like a home office) or a whole home, we endeavor to uncover more than simply what furniture a customer is interested in, but how they want their space to make them feel.
For this client the answer was complex. He was looking for a relatively small space (approximately 13’ x 9’), to be an "elevated" sanctuary. A place to feel inspired and invigorated, but also relaxed. Accomplishing this was made all the more challenging given the space was part of a much larger open floor plan that was also his home gym and kids’ playroom. Closing the space off was not an option, so we had to think creatively about how to define the area and provide some privacy.

To define the room without building a wall, we worked closely with the client on 4 features.
A coat of paint goes a long way to set a space apart. The large open floorplan was all one shade of neutral, so choosing a deep, energetic blue helped to both create separation from the other areas, as well as create the feeling the client was searching for.
In our initial meeting, the client asked for a "dramatic backdrop" for his frequent video meetings. For this, we suggested a wooden wall treatment. Given the shape of the room, slanted walls, and slightly lower than normal ceiling height, we recommended mounting the wood vertically and extending it across the ceiling. The final result is a bright and sophisticated background that’s sure to impress.

Another common trick to create definition within a larger space is an area rug. We chose a beautiful ombre-style rug from our partners at Inner Asia Rugs. The color palette pulls from both the blues in the wall and the warm tones of the wood.

In the center of the office space was a dated, generic fixture that looked like all the others on this level of the home (7 of them!). To set the office apart, we worked with our partners at Hubbardton Forge on a dramatic statement semi-flush fixture. This Vermont handcrafted lighting is anything but generic and gave the room the mid-century modern feel the client was looking for.

One of our most popular storage solutions is the Averill Room Divider. And while the client loved the look of the piece, the shape of the room with 45º half walls, plus the need for additional enclosed storage, would make this anything but a "standard" piece. Luckily, every Pompy piece is designed and handcrafted right here in Thetford, Vermont, so custom modifications (even those as dramatic as what this one would be) are never out of the question. We can’t wait to share more in the next part of the series… it’s a stunner!

One of the foundational aspects of our design services is floor planning. We work with our clients and customers to create spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful. Each customer is presented with both a 2D and 3D view of the original vs. suggested floorplan. For this project, the client noted the challenges of background light and screen glare.

The client asked for a design that would accommodate both the active (at your desk) work posture, as well as a more casual place to sit, read, even just listen to music. A place he could step away from the distractions of his computer screen. We suggested a floor plan that moved the customer’s "work/desk" area to the east-facing side of the room. Along with shielding the computer screen from glare for most of the day, this created ample room for a dedicated seating area along the western side of the room.

For this project, our client wanted designs inspired by mid-century aesthetics. Our bestselling Arlington was the ideal desk, but our original selection of the Newport Credenza did not fit the look or function the client was hoping for. Since we design and build every piece by hand, we used this project as the perfect opportunity to extend the Arlington collection. Working with the customer, we designed the very first Arlington Credenza, complete with extra deep cabinet storage to accommodate the client's large color laser printer.

To maximize the work surface of the desk, we also introduced our very first modular desk shelf, the Mt. Abraham Desk Shelf. We’d also just designed a brand new desk lamp, the Troy Task Lamp (coming soon!).

For the seating area, our ever-popular Westmore Chair and Ottoman (in a custom low-back design to better fit the half wall of the space) was ordered together with our brand new Orwell Table + Lamp. This versatile piece was a perfect size and features legs that echoed the style of the Arlington desk and credenza.

Finally, the client worked closely with our custom designs department on a truly one-of-a-kind room divider inspired by the Averill collection. This piece was made to exacting specifications to nest perfectly into the slanted wall while adding ample drawer storage. It was even designed in 2 pieces to accommodate being brought up the narrow curving staircase that leads to the client’s 3rd-floor office.

"It was never meant to be my primary office... As much as anything, it's just not a very inspiring space to get work done."
